Internship Program
We provide internships to well-qualified students. We are currently looking for an intern for the summer of 2011.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in a masters or PhD program.
- Must be in a field such as social work or counseling that would lead to licensure to practice psychotherapy in Arizona.
- Multilingual a plus.
- Forensic experience or training a plus.
- Will consider other fields on a case-by-case basis, such as marketing or IT.
Agency Description
Deer Valley Counseling is a private practice agency with an eclectic client population that includes individuals, couples, and families as well as heterosexual, gay, lesbian and transgender. Ages range from adolescent to adult. Modalities include individual, couples, family and group counseling. Common presenting issues include general mental health issues, relationship issues, gender dysphoria, anger management and sexual issues. We see clients from Friday through Tuesday and have early morning and evening appointments. Groups are scheduled at a fixed time every week. Currently, Deer Valley Counseling personnel include Sandra Nettles, LCSW, MSSW, Clinical Director and Jamie Nettles, MS, Business Director. Deer Valley Counseling does not discriminate against any person or persons seeking professional counseling. Treatment plans are tailored to the wants and needs of the client.
Internship Job Description
Interns duties will include as many aspects of private practice as is practical and appropriate—
- Initially observe group counseling and then facilitate.
- Initially observe individual, couples and family counseling sessions and then receive your own client load.
- Work individually with group clients that have difficulty with treatment assignments due to language or lack of educational skills to complete and pass the assignments.
- Perform intake paper work with group clients.
- Perform office duties such as answering the phone, making appointments, maintaining client files, calling and reminding clients of their appointments, collecting client fees and scheduling follow-up appointments.
- Intern will be supervised at all times either by Sandra Nettles, LCSW, MSSW and/or Jamie Nettles, MS, Business Director.

Group Observation
We allow well-qualified students to observe groups. No more than one student at a time, please.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in a masters or PhD program.
- Must be in a counseling field such as social work or counseling.
- Must sign a contract stating they will observe only and will maintain confidentiality.
