General Psychotherapy Approach

Although the approach your therapist will use will depend on the exact nature of the problem, she will often use techniques such as those described below.

  • Talk About the Problems. Your therapist will listen and ask questions to help you identify and clarify the problems.
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. By learning to identify your triggers, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and consequences, you can learn to take better control of your actions.
  • Strengths Counseling. Your therapist will help you identify strengths that you can employ to solve your problems.
  • Assignments. Your therapist will give you exercises that will help you develop new skills and new patterns of thoughts and behaviors.
